I would like to first introduce myself to my future readers and speak briefly about my background. I am fashion designer Lance Gordon, I own a private label design firm founded back in early 2008. I started my business to address a huge demand that exists in helping the emerging designer entrepreneurs to get started in the fashion business. Since then, I have worked with a wide variety of clients, from emerging fashion designers looking to break into the high fashion world, to start up clothing companies looking to build a new brand, to established manufacturers looking to revamp their existing lines. visit website: http://www.lancegordonapparel.com

My team and I consist of; a top notch pattern maker, with 20 years of knowledge under her belt, an expert tailor, who headed up her own 600 station factory in Vietnam and a team of very skilled Asian sample makers. THE BLOG:  http://curiousdesigners.blogspot.com

I recently became aware of a deep need in the fashion community. I have heard just about every rumor out there, crazy myth and bad advice on how to get started in the fashion industry. I realized after taking countless phone calls from emerging designers and upstart clothing labels asking for advice on " HOW TO, WHAT DO I DO, WHERE DO I GO, DO YOU KNOW WHO I CAN TALK TO" kind of questions, that there are a lot of people who need practical advice on how to break into the fashion industry.

Well, I decided to start this blog, affectionately titled "HOW TO START A CLOTHING LINE AND LAUNCH YOUR FASHION EMPIRE". In it I will discuss and present smart shortcuts that will not only save you precious time and money, but educate you on how the fashion business works, what to look for, how to avoid pitfalls, how to market yourself, find financing(YES, it is out there), how to prepare and get buyers to look at your line and finally, how to grow your fashion business. I will be sharing my contacts and resources for sourcing fabrics, sewing production and other domestic and international resources. I have acquired many contacts over the past 15 years in the fashion business AND now I will share it all FOR FREE, YES FREE.

If you ever wanted to know the HOW TO, GO SEE, WHERE IS, WHO DOES and NOW WHAT DO I DO, join my FREE NEWSLETTER and I and my team will share all our fashion advice and answer your questions. I will have a forum where you can post topics, ask questions and start discussions on any desired topic. I believe you will find this blog invaluable, plus find the answers you need to launch, expand and succeed in the fashion design industry.

The best shopping advice I've ever received came from my grandmother.  Her legacy, for me, was her infinite wisdom. And nowhere was she savvier than in her sense of style. Not only could she rock a hat like nobody'sbusiness but she liked her classic designers. I grew up hearing the names Cartier, Dior and Chanel and for the longest time, I thought they were friends of my grandparents.  I still have one of my grandmother's classic Chanel suits, lovingly preserved, in the back of my closet.

I learned early on that it's important to have your classic, well-made staples...those articles in your wardrobe that you can always turn to, no matter what. Comfortable and eternally in-fashion, they always fit and always flatter. We refer to this concept of being eternally chic as remaining evergreen.

Designer Shopping.... Discount Style

Finding designer garments is not difficult...but finding a good sale always makes it better. Here in New York, I consistently check out Loehmann's for the most amazing discounted designer clothing finds. I've unearthed several of my all-time favorite staples there.

These are also the pieces that have received the most compliments as well, I might add...making them guaranteed confidence-boosters:

  • A two or three-button jacket: Every woman needs that perfectly-tailored jacket that cinches in at the waist and accentuates the smallest part of your frame. This will be a must-have for everything from business meetings to a casual meal out.
  • The little black dress: Practically an essential. I have a Nicole Miller dress I'd purchased from Bluefly(dot)com. It's simple, elegant and can be dressed up or down with the accessories. It's the classic length of just to the knee and knots at the waist, giving me automatic slimness where I want it most.
  • Charcoal or black dress trousers: Look for a flat front (no pleats, please!) and they should be hemmed to hit about a half-inch from the ground. Try to find materials that will work in all seasons, such as lightweight wool. Many companies, like Moschino, feature blends that have that extra little bit of stretch to them. Theory does a fabulous pants for women as well and Loehmann's often has special Samples sales of Theory clothes twice a year for even greater discounts! Sign up for their Insider Club so you don't miss that!
  • Jeans: But not just any jeans...I'm talking the pair that fit you like a glove. This is probably going to require that you try on about twenty pairs to get something that fits you in the waist, tush, hips and thighs. The rule is to make sure they fit the biggest part of you and have the other areas tailored to fit properly. And yes, you can (and should) have jeans tailored.
  • Classic overcoat: Find one that's either mid-thigh in length (car coat) or mid-calf (my preference...it works for dresses/evenings). Make sure it fits you well in the shoulders and should cinch in at the waist. We're looking for an A-line look for a streamlined effect.

Work slowly to build up your classic wardrobe...and remember that you can supplement these staple pieces with the fashion that's trending, so you'll always look chic and stylish.

And remember: Fashion is as much about attitude as it is about what's on your body. Now, go try on a beautiful, rockin' hat.

Thanks to the huge growth in the use of smart phones, QR codes are being used in marketing, advertising and promotions in all industries, including fashion. Flexsystems, the San Diego Manufacturer of pvc labels and custom clothing labels, is now embedding the QR codes into its soft pvc sew on labels. These in turn can be sewn or heat sealed onto garments, hats, bags, shoes and most soft goods.
Picking up on shoe trends is almost an instinct for shoe junkies. After taking a mental note of shoe trends on the catwalk and the street, I noticed a trend by designers and city slickers alike. I speculated that this revival was beckoning upon us but was too fearful to say so. Now, over the past couple of months I can truely say, the platform is back.
Even though it may not be exactly feminine, there is something about the "Boyfriend Look" that keep heads turning. The popularity of this style is starting to heat up and is a style to keep an eye on. Here are the top 5 ways to carry it off (whether you use your boyfriend's clothes or not).
