Michael Tiernan Announces a Record Year for 2009 in Revenues, Earnings, and Team Building
Boston Proper Inc., the multi-channel, direct-to-consumer women’s apparel brand, celebrates a record year in a challenging environment. In a letter to the management team last week, Chairman Michael Tiernan announced that 2009 was a record year for the company in both revenues and earnings. Tiernan recognized all facets of the business in his letter, but specifically cited that the team had made extraordinary progress in increasing productivity on reduced inventories, while operations delivered exceptional service at reduced costs. Online revenues increased 10% and the customer voted for the brand’s distinctive and sensuous fashions.

Tiernan told his employees, “Many, many thanks for making my last year as CEO the best ever.”
Boston Proper’s record year can be attributed to the synergy between merchandising, marketing and operations but also to the highly successful transition of Sheryl Clark to President & CEO. The transition was a closely managed two-year project. Tiernan and his Board of Directors were dedicated to finding the right combination of merchandising skill and business acumen, but were uncompromising in ensuring that Tiernan’s successor had the passion and dedication to the brand and the company’s culture. After joining Boston Proper in January 2009, Clark served as President and was promoted to CEO in December. Clark has over 20 years of General Management and Merchandising experience, working for major brands with global recognition including Old Navy, Gap, and Bloomingdales.
Clark has brought new energy, passion and insight to Boston Proper. Her strong leadership skills and drive for excellence include a deep respect for the brand’s culture and affinity with the customer. Clark has continued Tiernan’s legacy and belief in internal entrepreneurship.
