Opposites attract this spring as unexpected pairings rule the runways. Divergent style themes such as tender & tough, sexy & demure, glamorous & sporty and preppy & punk express the multiple dimensions of a modern woman's lifestyle. By reworking classic favorites with a punk edge, a feminine touch or a sporty detail, a whole new wardrobe can be created.
Shorts and trench coats top the list of hot spring items and dresses reappear with ruching, cutouts and sheer layering, creating a feminine look with an edge. Color palettes range from khaki earth tones to vivid citrus colors, and contrasting black with white and gold with silver also make statements this spring. Overall, embellishments on clothing and accessories transform last season's styles and add personality to any spring wardrobe.
"This spring bold new looks are created by wearing unconventional pieces together," said Stephanie Solomon, operating vice president for fashion direction at Bloomingdale's. "It brings a smile to my face thinking about all the versatility and creative freedom women will have by mixing this season?s hottest trends, from Aqua to Chanel, with pieces they already own."
Spring 2010 Ready-To-Wear Trends:
Jeggings - A combination of jeans and leggings, it's the new way to wear denim. J Brand and Daddy Long Legs lead the way this spring.
Shorts and Miniskirts - Shorts are to spring what leggings were to fall. Keeping hemlines high, shorts and miniskirts from designers such as Milly, Alice + Olivia, and Bloomingdale?s own Aqua line lead the trend for both day and evening looks.
Boxy Jackets - The oversized, slouchy blazer of seasons past is making its way out as the structured, embellished jacket edges its way in. Chanel's signature boxy jacket shines, looking fresh in tweed and trimmed with subtle fringe.
The New Suit - Spring is the time to ditch the traditional pant and skirt suits for jackets paired with shorts. This trend highlights opposites, pairing causal bottoms with structured jackets as seen at Giorgio Armani and DKNY.
Easy Cargo Pants - Worn slouchy at the hip and with a pegged leg, this trend appears as a transformation of last spring?s harem pant. This sporty look fares best when worn with a contrasting glam top or loose-fitting blazer as seen on the runways of Elie Tahari and D&G.
Striped Bateau and Cropped Tees - The story is striped at Jean Paul Gaultier, Missoni, and a new designer to Bloomingdale's, Araks. The new, cropped silhouette allows for easy wear and looks best when layered with another tee in a contrasting color.
Bad Girl & Good Girl Dresses - From rebellious details, such as cutouts and patchwork, as seen at BCBG and Emanuel Ungaro to romantic ruching and pleats, at Alice + Olivia and Diane von Furstenberg, these contrasting themes make it easy to find a frock to wear with the in-laws and the outlaws.
The Trench - Worn long, short, belted or ruffled, the trench coat is the capstone piece to any outfit. Burberry and Yigal Azro?el showed how to wear it best, adding a sporty edge to a ruffle dress or casual sportswear.
Boyfriend Shirts - Taking a cue from the guys this spring, plaid oversized shirts look crisp when belted and paired with a skirt as shown at Marc by Marc Jacobs. Aqua also stays in line with western influences, featuring oversized chambray tops to be worn with anything from khaki pants to shorts.
Metallic Shine - Muted shine-in precious metal tones of silver, gold and copper as highlighted by Michael Kors and Tory Burch-is more demure than prior seasons' sequins, creating a new level of sophistication.
Matte Leather - A standout performer on the runways of Yigal Azro?el and Blumarine, is leather in earthy tones as the fabric of the season. The most notable new piece is leather shorts, often worn in a loose-fitting silhouette and tied with a leather drawstring at the waist.
Spring 2010 Fashion Accessory Trends:
Shoes Transform Classics - If there's one shoe every girl needs this spring it's the oxford. This classic, tailored shoe from designers such as Pour La Victoire and Stuart Weitzman brings a cool, masculine edge to any wardrobe. Also new on the scene is the clog, inspired by the runways of Chanel. Offered in a variety of heel heights and styles, Sam Edelman and Alejandro Ingelmo make it easy to find the perfect style.
Drawstring & Mini Bags - From Kooba to Marc by Marc Jacobs, drawstring pouches look best in leather and are adorned with hardware such as studs, grommets and zippers. Here to stay from the fall is the mini bag with a long chain, looking up-to-date when worn in shades of white and pale grey as seen at DKNY.
Belts - Skinny or wide, basic or with a jewelry inspired buckle, belts are a great way to complete any spring look. With styles from Burberry, Marc by Marc Jacobs, and D&G, there is no shortage of waist-cinching adornments this spring.
Retro Shades & Geek Chic Glasses - Retro shapes make a big comeback in eyewear as styles by Marc by Marc Jacobs and Ray-Ban lead the trend. Aqua also debuts sunglasses this spring with a balanced assortment of styles ranging from wayfarers and aviators to oversize glam silhouettes. Thick frames with clear lenses are also a hit, popping up in the collections of Tom Ford and Dior, and creating a geeky contrast to the ultra feminine looks of the season.
Focus on Wristwear - From jelly watches to bangles, the focus is on the wrist this spring. With oversized boyfriend watches, chunky statement bracelets and stacked cuffs, Toy Watch and Michael Kors show that more is more when it comes to the wrist.
Lucite Jewelry - The must have Jewelry trend of the season; so versatile it can be worn with everything! Aqua, Kenneth Jay Lane and Louis Vuitton accessories highlight pale shades of blinding white and translucent clear this spring.
Peek-a-Boo - Innerwear as outerwear is appearing across the board, and layering is the key to pulling off this look. Alberta Ferretti and Jean Paul Gaultier showed sheer fabrics and soft colors atop contrasting deep-colored innerwear for a romantic, yet risky look, while Brian Reyes provides a more demure option to the trend, showing 1960s swimwear inspired brassieres with a high-waisted pant.
